The Evelyn Partners Malaysia Tour: What It Meant, Who It Reached, and Why It Matters

The Evelyn Partners Malaysia Tour: What It Meant, Who It Reached, and Why It Matters

Over the past few weeks, Melbourne Capital Group hosted one of the most significant event series, a multi-city tour across Penang, Johor, and Kuala Lumpur, co-hosted with our partners from Evelyn Partners, one of the UK's leading wealth management firms.

James von Simson, Emily Goss, and Harriette Collings made the journey from the UK specifically to be here. Not as part of a broader regional sweep, but exclusively to work alongside Melbourne Capital Group and our clients in Malaysia. That distinction matters, and it says something about the nature of the relationship we have built.

More Than a Provider Relationship

At every event he spoke at, James was clear about how Evelyn Partners approaches their international partnerships. They work only with firms they trust completely. Firms they consider, in James's own words, an extension of their own team. Melbourne Capital Group is the only Malaysia-based firm they have chosen to place that trust in.

For us, that confidence is reciprocated. Evelyn Partners sits within a carefully considered line-up of asset managers we recommend to our clients, not because of convenience, but because of a shared conviction that clients deserve independent, expert, and genuinely personalised guidance. This tour gave our clients and prospects the opportunity to experience that directly.

From Penang to Johor to KL: A Tour in Three Cities

The series spanned a wide range of formats and topics, from large-scale market update evenings to intimate succession planning dinners and a women's wealth brunch. Each event was designed to meet clients where they are, whether they were navigating complex cross-border investments, thinking about how to pass wealth across generations, or simply trying to make sense of an uncertain global market.

Joshua Webley, Business Manager at Melbourne Capital Group, co-hosted several events across both Penang and Kuala Lumpur:

"It was a special moment for us. The knowledge of this team, and their ability to field questions across such a wide range of subjects, came across so clearly to everyone in the room. I had to intervene at three separate events because James would genuinely have stayed for twelve hours answering every question thrown his way. But what struck me most was what happened after each presentation, all three of them stayed behind for hours every time, getting to know everyone in the room and making sure each person had the chance to speak. The care they have for putting clients first is exactly why we trust them as a partner, and why they chose to trust us."

That ability to stay present; to treat a room of thirty people with the same depth of attention as a one-to-one client meeting, was a theme that ran through every event on the tour.

Evelyn Partners in Kuala Lumpur

A First for Johor

For Helen Thomas, our Private Wealth Manager based out of Johor, the tour carried particular significance. It marked the first time Evelyn Partners had hosted events in Johor, and the response from attendees made the occasion.

"It was a pleasure to welcome the Evelyn Partners team to Johor for the first time. From the energy at the women's wealth brunch to the depth of the succession planning session, attendees were engaged throughout. The feedback reflected just how much value people took from those conversations. A highlight for me was listening to the women in the room take the discussion further amongst themselves; asking more questions, sharing their own experiences, and genuinely wanting to learn more about financial planning. That kind of organic engagement is what you hope for, but rarely get to witness."

The women's wealth event in particular, held under the theme Her Wealth, Her Terms, drew a level of personal engagement that went well beyond what typically happens in a seminar setting. It was a reminder that when the topic is framed in the right way, and the expertise in the room is genuine, people open up.

On Family Offices and Individual Purpose

The KL leg of the tour closed with a family office panel. One of the most substantive conversations of the entire series. James, who serves as Deputy Chair of STEP, the global professional body for advisers working with international families, brought a perspective rooted in years of working with multi-generational wealth across jurisdictions.

His framing of the challenge was simple but important:

"What families are trying to achieve is different for each individual, and without understanding that, you end up forcing everyone to chase the same outcome."

It's a point that sits at the heart of what both Melbourne Capital Group and Evelyn Partners believe about financial planning. There is no universal answer. The job of an adviser, and of a trusted partner firm, is to start with the person, not the product.

Looking Ahead

This tour wasn’t a one-off. It is part of an ongoing commitment, on both sides, to bring world-class expertise closer to the internationally mobile clients we serve across Asia Pacific.
