1000 Hearts & 1 Cause MOU Signing & Panel Discussion

1000 Hearts & 1 Cause MOU Signing & Panel Discussion

On 12 March 2026, Melbourne Capital Group (MCG) and Yayasan Jantung Malaysia (YJM) officially launched the 1000 Hearts & 1 Cause campaign with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This marked the beginning of a year-long initiative built around a shared mission: ensuring that no Malaysian family has to face a heart condition alone.

As a symbolic first step, MCG contributed an initial RM5,000 donation to YJM, helping to kickstart the campaign’s fundraising efforts in support of patient care and community outreach programmes.

The Cause That Started It All

At the heart of this campaign is a reality that many Malaysian families quietly experience.

While Malaysia’s public healthcare system subsidises most heart treatments, a critical gap remains. It is not in the operating theatre, but in the everyday burden families face when travelling from states such as Perak, Kedah, Johor, Pahang and Melaka to access specialist care in Kuala Lumpur. The costs of transport, accommodation, lost income and time away from home.

For B40 families already stretched thin, these expenses can become impossible to manage. Some caregivers resort to sleeping in hospital corridors or making exhausting long-distance commutes, simply to avoid placing further financial strain on their households.

This Is Where YJM Steps In

YJM operates a halfway house that provides low-cost accommodation for these families, removing one of the most significant barriers to accessing care. Yet even with subsidised rates, the cost remains prohibitive for many families who need it most. Through 1000 Hearts & 1 Cause, MCG and YJM aim to address these remaining barriers by:

  • Expanding and upgrading the halfway house to accommodate more families
  • Strengthening operational sustainability so fees can remain affordable, and to support additional add Ons such a food and beverages, plus laundry service.
  • Increasing awareness of the availability of the YJM halfway house and mobile rural health screenings to catch conditions earlier, reducing the need for crisis-level intervention.

This initiative reframes the conversation from charity to something more lasting.

Structural resilience.

When the Right People Show Up

Panel Discussion (from left): Joshua Webley, Dr Rowina Lynne Murray, Chris Crowe, Mrs. Yugeswari, Patient Family Representative from Kedah, Dr Robinder Sambhi

The evening centred on a panel discussion that brought together perspectives from medicine, lived experience and financial planning.

We were honoured to be joined by Dr Robinder Sambhi, Vice Chairman of Yayasan Jantung Malaysia, and Dr Rowina Lynne Murray, Clinical Cardiologist and Internal Medicine Physician at the National Heart Institute (IJN), whose expertise provided valuable insight into both the medical realities of heart disease and the importance of early detection.

Equally moving was the presence of Mrs. Yugeswari, mother to heart patient from Kedah, who shared her personal experience of navigating two heart conditions within the same household.

Her young son was diagnosed with a congenital heart condition at the age of 7 and continues to undergo monitoring and treatment, now aged 15, while an elderly relative recently underwent bypass surgery and later faced further complications due to severe arterial blockages.

Their story served as a powerful reminder of the emotional and practical strain families often face when serious health conditions require ongoing treatment and frequent travel.

Joining the discussion was Chris Crowe, Director of Melbourne Capital Group, who shared insights into how health crises often become financial crises for families. His perspective reinforced the campaign’s focus on the connection between heart health awareness and financial preparedness.

Guiding the conversation throughout the evening was moderator Joshua Webley, whose thoughtful questions ensured that each voice was heard and every perspective given space.

This Is Just The Beginning

While the event marked an important milestone, it was never intended to be the whole story.

1000 Hearts & 1 Cause is a year-long initiative, and what we witnessed that evening was simply its opening chapter.

Over the coming months, MCG and YJM will continue working together through community outreach, awareness campaigns and on-the-ground programmes designed to create meaningful and lasting impact.

There will be more opportunities to gather, more stories to share and more ways for people to support the cause.

Because the families this campaign seeks to support deserve more than a single evening of goodwill. They deserve a community that shows up for them consistently throughout the year.
